East Village, New York

I joined Ukrainian Village Voices to sing, to meet other artists in New York, and to explore a culture I had first encountered through one of my best friends from college. She invited me to live with her family in the Ukrainian Village in Chicago for a few months, where I met recent immigrants, multi-generational Ukrainian-American families, artists, and musicians. It was a formative moment of my life, introducing me to a culture and a cosmopolitan international perspective that influenced how I began to see the world. I returned to the Ukrainian Village in Chicago many times between 2003-2010, but years passed before I had the chance to explore Ukrainian culture again, through this multi-cultural, ethnographically influenced musical ensemble in the Ukrainian Village in New York.
I am not Ukrainian, but the opportunity to sing in the polyphonic vocal tradition has made me curious to learn more about this fascinating culture, especially since it has come under existential threat due to the Russian invasion. I hope it might inspire you as well.
